Instructions
This converter lets you load a Closed Caption file in the SRT format used on DVDs and convert it to the DFXS format used by NetFlix’s instant streaming service.
I tried to make it as simple as possible. If you have SilverLight installed, you don’t have to install anything. I figured that would be a safe choice since NetFlix’s instant streaming uses SilverLight for it’s player.
Here’s the basic flow:
- Click Load File and pick the SRT file from your local file system*
- Set the time offset if necessary**
- Click the Convert button
- Click the Save button to save the new DFXP file locally
- In the NetFlix player, click CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + M to open the super secret menu
- Click Load Custom DFXP menu item and then select the file you created
That’s it.
* Of course that assumes you have an SRT file for the movie or show you want to watch. There are several sites that host these files.
** The SRT file assumes the show starts immediately. Sometimes the NetFlix version has a commercial or other lead in bit before the show starts. The offset lets you skip that bit and start the captions at the right spot. There really isn’t anything for it but to start the show and see how many seconds you need to wait to start the captions. If you leave the SRT file loaded in the converter, you can fiddle with the offset and re-convert until you get it right.
